Thesis topic: Making Apps Agent-Ready
Want to explore what it actually takes for an AI agent to use a mobile app? Join us for your master's thesis!
Are you a final-year master’s student looking for a thesis project that blends real-world impact with cutting-edge tech?
At Framna, we are passionate about creating digital products that shape markets and make everyday life better - and we want you to be part of it.
Every year, we welcome a group of master’s students into our Stockholm studio to spend their final semester with us. You will sit alongside our developers, designers, testers, analysts, and product delivery leads, get a place to sit in our cozy office, and join our social and learning activities - from lunch-and-learns to our weekly Friday demos and AWs. It is a chance to do your thesis in a collaborative setting, surrounded by people who are happy to share what they know.
Background
Mobile apps have always been designed for human users. But AI agents are increasingly being asked to use apps on people's behalf, completing bookings, filling forms, changing settings and retrieving information. Most apps were never built with this in mind.
Being operable by an agent is becoming a product requirement, much like being findable by a search engine once was. We do not yet have a clear picture of what makes an app agent-ready, which control surfaces work best, or what properties of an interface determine whether an agent can operate it at all.
In this thesis project, you will define a benchmark of realistic user tasks across one or more mobile apps and evaluate how reliably AI agents can complete them through different control surfaces: reading the app's accessibility tree, working from screenshots, or using explicitly declared capability interfaces.
What you will do
Some potential tasks within this thesis include:
Defining a benchmark of realistic user tasks such as completing a booking, changing a setting, filling a form, or retrieving specific information
Evaluating agent performance across three control surfaces: accessibility-tree navigation, vision-based control from screenshots, and declared capability surfaces such as App Intents or App Actions
Measuring task completion rate, steps taken versus optimal, latency and token cost per task, and recovery from mistakes
Documenting failure modes such as getting stuck, acting on the wrong element, or completing the wrong task
Identifying what makes an app easy or hard for an agent to operate, from accessibility labelling to custom components and modal flows
Recommending which actions an agent should be able to take on its own, and which should require the user to confirm
Who you are
This thesis may suit you if you:
Are interested in mobile development, HCI, or AI agents
Are curious about how apps need to evolve as AI agents become a new category of user
Enjoy building benchmarks, running structured experiments, and drawing out practical implications
